Stablecoins Meet Bakong: Can Cross-Border Payments Be Reinvented?

    Forum StageMain Plenary StageOpen

    À propos de cette session

The National Bank of Cambodia and SBI Group open the session by launching a proof of concept for stablecoin remittance between Japan and Cambodia. Using regulated stablecoins and Cambodia's national blockchain network, money moves between the two countries faster and at lower cost, arriving directly in recipients' Bakong wallets and making it easier for Cambodians in Japan to support their families at home. Leaders from the digital asset industry then test how far the model can travel: whether it extends to other countries and currencies, and whether Bakong can become a regional and global payment hub.

Beyond the Dollar: Stablecoins, Local-Currency Settlement & the Future of Money

    RoundtableRoundtable 2Open

    À propos de cette session

Most stablecoins in circulation are linked to the US dollar. For economies seeking to reduce their dependence on the dollar, that creates a fundamental contradiction: the same technology that can lower the cost of payments may also make dollar-denominated money easier to use. At the same time, local-currency settlement is advancing through bilateral arrangements, regional initiatives and domestic payment systems. The roundtable examines that tension directly. When do stablecoins solve a genuine user problem, and when do they reinforce existing monetary dependence? What would a credible local-currency digital instrument require in reserves, governance, redemption and supervision? And where does local-currency settlement provide a better answer than creating another form of digital money?
